Most Tall Ships today are owned and operated by non-profit organizations with missions grounded in environmental education and/or sail training, particularly personal development experiences for youth. Almost all make berths available for temporary crew or sail trainees. Regardless of your age or sailing ability, you can live the dream and enjoy a Tall Ship adventure of your own. Simply click on a link below for more information about opportunities aboard the vessels participating in Tall Ship Celebration: Bay City 2006.
If you go, let us know! One of the things we love the most about producing Tall Ship Celebration is hearing from our guests about their experiences.
US Brig Niagara
Square-Rig Seamanship Training
From mid-May through mid-September, adults and teens (16 and up) from around the country (and the world) sail onboard learning the history of Niagara and traditional square-rig seamanship skills. While the ship is recently built with modern navigation and safety equipment, the design of her rig, the skills needed to sail her, and the living conditions onboard are authentic. This program affords trainees the opportunity to live the sailor's life, to have an adventurous experience under sail, and to learn from professionals who possess knowledge that has been passed down and preserved by square-rig seafarers for centuries.

Picton Castle
Sail Training Program
Sail trainees have the opportunity to sail around the world as deckhands on a traditional square-rigged ship. All on board participate in the ship's operation: handling sails, scrubbing the deck, taking a turn at the wheel, raising anchor, hauling on lines, helping in the galley, going aloft (optional), or keeping lookout. Training classes in seamanship and navigation are included as well as plenty of opportunity to learn square-rig sailing. No sailing experience is needed. Trainees are men & women age 18 and up who are physically fit, cheerful, flexible in getting along with new people and situations, and above all, enthusiastic about the voyage.

Unicorn
Sisters Under Sail
Unicorn provides leadership development programs for teenage girls through its sail training program, Sisters Under Sail. Trainees build confidence, enhance self-esteem, develop social conscience and learn the value of sisters working together towards a common goal. They will work closely with the ship's crew: standing watch, learning how to steer the ship, setting sails, navigating a course and learning the skills it takes to operate and maintain a 118-foot, 150-ton steel vessel. They will have daily discussion sessions to connect their seafaring experience with their teenage life on land. Unicorn has designed an exciting program that teaches the fundamentals of sailing through team-oriented activities that are challenging and fun.
